Weighted average calculated by (Units x Rank) / Total Units

How Grades Are Calculated

High school grades are calculated based on the Weighted Average Method. This means that subjects with higher units (more class hours) have a greater impact on your final grade.

GPA = Σ (Subject Units × Grade) / Total Units

For example, if you get a Rank 1 in a 4-unit Math class, it counts 4 times as much as a Rank 1 in a 1-unit elective class.

Grade Types & Conversions

Our calculator supports various grading systems used in Korean high schools. We convert them into a standard 1-9 rank scale for calculation.

1. Rank (1-9)

The standard relative evaluation system. Use the exact rank documented on your transcript.

2. Achievement (A-E)

Used for specialized subjects or absolute evaluations. Converted as follows:

Rank Conversion13579

3. Traditional (Su-Ga)

Traditional 5-scale grading system.

Tips for Accurate Calculation

  • Check Units: Ensure the 'Units' (weekly class hours) are entered correctly. This is the most common source of error.
  • Semester Sync: Use the "Copy 1st Sem" button to quickly duplicate subjects from the first semester to the second, then adjust only the grades.
  • Exclude P/F: Subjects marked as Pass/Fail without a specific grade should not be included in this calculation.
Note: Universities may have their own specific calculation formulas (e.g., Z-score, reflecting specific subjects only). This calculator provides a general average based on typical high school standards.

Reading Weighted Grade Results

A Korean high school grade average is a weighted average: each subject's grade times its credit units, divided by the total units. Subjects with more units weigh more.

Worked example: A three-subject example

  1. Korean: grade 2 × 4 units = 8
  2. Math: grade 3 × 4 units = 12
  3. English: grade 1 × 3 units = 3
  4. (8 + 12 + 3) ÷ 11 units = 2.09

A plain average of the grades is 2.0, but weighting by units gives 2.09 because math carries more units.

Before you rely on the result

  • Enter each subject's units exactly as on the transcript.
  • Check whether achievement-only (A–E) subjects are excluded from the average.
  • Universities differ in which subjects and years they count.
  • Admission scores must be recalculated with each university's own rules.

Frequently asked questions

Did the grading system change for students entering high school in 2025?

Yes. From first-year students in 2025, Korean high schools use a 5-level relative scale. Do not mix 9-level and 5-level grades in one average.
