Why Converted Amounts Differ From Real Payments
A converter shows a reference amount. Bank counters, card payments and remittances each apply their own rates and fees.
Worked example: Paying USD 100 abroad by card
- At a reference rate of 1,350 KRW per USD, the converter shows 135,000 KRW.
- Card issuers add network and foreign-use fees, usually around 1β2% in total.
- Choosing to pay in KRW at the terminal (DCC) applies the merchant rate and can cost 3β8% more.
Treat the converted amount as a baseline and expect the statement to be slightly higher. Paying in the local currency is usually cheaper.
Before you rely on the result
- Check the bank or card rate too.
- Cash buying and selling rates differ.
- Fixed fees matter more for small payments.
- For remittance or investment decisions, check quoted rates, fees and processing time.
