Tipping Guide
Tipping is a standard practice in the US service industry. It is a way to show appreciation for good service.
✨ Key Features
Enter the bill amount, select a tip percentage, and choose the number of people to split the bill. The app automatically calculates the total tip, total amount, and amount per person.
💡 Tipping Guidelines
🤔 Why do we tip?
In the US, tipping is often the primary source of income for service reliability. Tipped minimum wages are lower, so tips bridge the gap to a living wage. Treat it as payment for service, not just a bonus.
🆚 % Tip vs 💵 Flat Tip
Use for dining, taxi, salon where service scales with price.
Use for bellhops ($1-2/bag), bartenders ($1/drink).
🍽️ Restaurant (15-20%)
Standard service is 15-18%, excellent service is 20%+. Recently, 18-20% has become the norm.
🍸 Bartender ($1-2)
Tip $1-2 per drink or 20% of the total tab.
🚕 Taxi / Rideshare (15-20%)
Tip 15-20% of the fare. Add extra $1-2 per bag if they help with luggage.
🏨 Hotel
Bellhop ($1-2/bag), Housekeeping ($2-5/night). Best to keep small bills handy.
🚫 When Tipping is Optional
Fast food, takeout, and counter service (coffee shops) do not require tips, though it is appreciated. It is okay to select 'No Tip' on kiosks.
🧾 Gratuity / Service Charge
Check for 'Gratuity Included' on your bill, common for large groups (6+). You generally don't need to tip extra in this case.
🧮 Calculation Example
Example: $50 Meal, 8.875% Tax (NY)
- Food: $50.00
- Tax: $4.44
- Subtotal: $54.44
- Tip (20%): +$10.00 (Not on $54.44!)
- Total: $64.44
⚠️ Note: Pre-tax vs Post-tax?
Technically, tips should be based on the Pre-tax subtotal. However, card machines often calculate based on the Post-tax total. Use the pre-tax amount for a 'proper' calculation.
