INFO! In South Korea, as of June 2023, the "International Age" system is officially mandated for all judicial and administrative purposes. While the traditional "Counting Age" is still used socially, official documents follow International Age.

✨ Age Calculator Guide: Understanding the 3 Systems

South Korea has long used different age-counting systems in daily life versus legal/standard contexts. While the "International Age Unification Law" (enacted June 28, 2023) standardized age on official documents, three systems are still used depending on the situation.

1. International Age

The global standard, starting at 0 at birth and increasing by 1 on each birthday.

  • Usage: Medical prescriptions, insurance, voting, retirement age, pension eligibility.
  • Calculation: Current Year - Birth Year (if birthday hasn't passed, subtract 1).

2. Counting Age (Traditional Korean Age)

A traditional East Asian system where a baby is 1 year old at birth and everyone ages up on New Year's Day (Jan 1st).

  • Usage: Casual conversation, social hierarchy, customary honorifics in Korea.
  • Calculation: Current Year - Birth Year + 1.

3. Year Age

Calculated by subtracting the birth year from the current year, regardless of the individual's month and day of birth.

  • Usage: Youth Protection Act (buying alcohol/tobacco), Military Service Act, education enrollment.
  • Calculation: Current Year - Birth Year.

⚖️ Legal Age Standards in Korea

Korean laws apply 'International Age' and 'Year Age' differently depending on the context.

🌎 Age Systems Globally

Western Countries (e.g., USA)

Strictly use International Age. Age-based regulations are often more specific; for example, in the US: age 16 for driving, 18 for legal adulthood, and 21 for alcohol purchase.

Japan and China

Formerly shared the 'Counting Age' culture but have officially transitioned to International Age (Japan in 1950, China in the 1960s-70s). Japan rarely uses counting age socially anymore.

💡 Helpful Facts

  • Insurance Age: Insurers use a specialized 'Insurance Age' rounded to the nearest year from the policy start date.
  • Zodiac Signs: In tradition, the Chinese zodiac changes on 'Ipchun' (Beginning of Spring), not New Year's Day.
